Description :  Early Medieval Britain Anglo Saxon Gold Thrymsa York ShillingAnglo Saxon Thrymsa Shilling "York" Variety D. Viewing by Arent Pol of the University of Leiden he stated. "Somewhere last year, I received good photographs and from there I gave as my preliminary ‘judgement’ that, although the coin had indeed a somewhat strange appearance in comparison with the only other existing specimen in reasonable quality. I have had a close look at he edge and there I only saw the usual characteristics of hand-struck coin. Designs do slightly differ from those of the good quality Harrogate find, so these two items stem from different sets of dies. On the find from France, I did a specific gravity analysis that provided us with a gold content that is completely in accordance with the same analyses I did in 2016-2018 on the Harrogate finds (the second being utterly worn) : +/- 60 % between 62 and 59 % gold. After having seen the coin personally, I remain at my previous position : there is in my opinion no reason to doubt the coin’s authenticity”. I have listened to the finder’s story with regard to the provenance, but this was of no influence on my verdict that is based on the object alone – only I can add that the other items (gold and silver coins as well as archaeological objects of the 6th-8th centuries) that were shown to me did not arouse any suspicion on my part either, so in a way were able to confirm the pedigree…"
