| | Condemnation | | | The gold colour of the coin is somewhat pale. Genuine aurei have a somewhat warmer gold colour. The RF analysis revealed an excessively high silver content of 7.4%. It is noticeable that the flan shows no convexity, as would be expected in an ancient hammered coinage. Instead, the fields on both sides are almost flat (‘lifeless’). The letters are predominantly slightly thickened, as is generally found on slightly worn antique dies. In sharp contrast to this are sequences with extremely fine serif writing (e.g. ‘ST’ on AVGVSTVS on the obverse, ‘C’ on COS on the reverse). This phenomenon cannot be explained on the basis of the wear pattern to which ancient coin dies are subject.
