Adding Items

The uploading facility has been designed to be easy and very fast to upload data.   However users should be familiar with section before uploading images   To upload and image click on 'Add Item'.  Please read the instructions at the bottom of this page.

The quickest way to load an item is to find a similar item first. Do a search and click view.  The at the bottom of the screen, click on 'Create a new entry using this item' and modify the data as appropriate and add them image by clicking on browse.   If you can't find a similar item you will need to create a new item from the beginning as follows...

All items need to be categorised and each item marked with an '*' must have an entry. Please select as appropriate starting on the top left going down.  The database contains wide array of possible categories, for guidelines on these read the next two sections on this page. If you have items that do not fit this structure please send an email to the administrator on [email protected]

The right-hand side of the form contains mainly free-field entries.  It should be noted that the title field will be auto-filled with the 'key info' and 'other keys' when the item is saved. The 'Description' field should contain a detailed description of the item.

Source Details should be fiilled as appropriate, with originating link containing the URL to the source site if appropriate.

Item details contain Catalog details if available, if they do not exist and you have a multitude of entries please email the administrator at administrator@forgerynetwork with the references and category you wish to add. Otherwise add these references to the description.

Related Item' is designed to match up records which are related, a die match on coin is good example when this should be used.  Enter the related Item's Item number.   Enter weight and size details where possible, catalog being the measure it should be and actual being the actual item measurement.    Condemnation should be filled for all items which are forgeries or suspected forgeries.

Item Types

A basic description of the items types are as follows..

Forgery: There are four types of Forgeries.  Modern: Recently produced to copy an item intended for collectors.  Contemporary:  A forgery of the time.  Only enter items into this category that you know for sure are immitations. Reproduction: reproduction coins designed not to deceive. Often produced by museums or for museums.  Published: Forgeries that have been published by a widely recognised authority.

Suspect: Has three sub categories. Highly Suspect: You are almost certain this item is a forgery.  Suspect: You are reasonably confident the item is probably a forgery.  Mildly Suspicious:  You have reasons to be suspicious that this item is not genuine.

Uncertain:  Load into this category that you are not sure about.  Other users can then give their opinion on the item. Disputed Items may go in this category also when a widely accepted agreement can not be ascertained.

Authentic: Load images here that you are certain are authentic only.   These can then be used for comparisons with other items.

For items that are not authentic or Uncertain Please give your reasons in the area 'Condemnation'.

Categories

The categories are largely self explanatory, but here are some guidelines on how they break down.

Below defines the era.  Exceptions do occur as some reigns do cross the boundaries and in these cases it will go into the category where most of the reign or rule occurred

Ancient: Prior Circa 399 AD: Essentially everything before the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Early Medieval: Covers the period 400 AD - 999 AD, approximately.

Medieval: Covers the period from 1000 AD to 1499 AD, approximately.

Old: Covers the period 1500 AD to 1900. In some cases it may include items up to the first world war (1915).

Modern:    Items of the modern era, meaning from about 1900 (some cases up to 1915) until today.

Images

Please limit image size to about 500 Kilobytes. Please crop the images, thus make the item almost touch each edge of the image or cut out the space not containing the item.  This will allow the item to be both clearly visible as a 'Thumbnail' image as well as the large image.

To load an image off a website right-click on the image and select 'save as' and name the file saving it as a .jpeg or .jpg file.  Please insure the image is in a landscape format, thus its width is more than its height.

Using MS Paint to manipulate Images

The simplest tool to manipulate images is the one everyone has, Paint.   To combine two images of an obverse and reverse of a coin, open both images in Paint. Go the reverse image and type ctrl - A together (Select all) and then ctrl -c (copy).  Then go to the obverse, with the mouse go to the bottom right corner and drag the white area out making the image bigger.  Then type ctrl-v (paste) and drag the obverse image to the right.  Use the select tool if necessary to crop the image together and tighter to the top-right corner using ctrl A, if necessary.   Then finally go to the bottom right and drag the white area in cropping the whole image.  Then save the combined image.

This might sound complicated, but in reallity it is quite straight forward and with practice you can manipulate images tightly in less than a minute.   If you have any comments, problems email the administrator [email protected]
