Description :  Ancient Greek Oriental Ptolemiac Egypt Ptolemy VPTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes. 204-180 BC. AR Tetradrachm (25.5mm, 14.27 g, 1h). Tyre mint. Diademed and draped bust right / BASI?EOS ?TO?EMAIOY, eagle standing left on thunderbolt; to left, club surmounted by Tyre monogram; NI to right, ?I between legs. Svoronos 1297; Mørkholm, Portrait , pl. 23, 12, and obv. die A9; SNG Copenhagen 505 var. (control between legs); Noeske –. EF, toned, faint scratch in field on obverse. Rare. Mørkholm’s study of the portrait coinage of Ptolemy V focused on the “main series”, which comprises a variety of issues from an uncertain military mint in Phoenicia during the Fifth Syrian War. In his die study, he noted that obverse die A6 of the uncertain mint was also known to have been used at the mint of Tyre. This coin presents a new obverse die link based on die A9 (see the following lot for an issue of the military mint struck with this die).

Same reverse die as 13888 IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 7 No.1/2 1982 Page 9 No.6 This coin has been condemned by the IBSCC Photo/ by permission International Bureau for the Suppression of Counterfeit Coins. Refer Bulletin on Counterfeits reference above. From a series of copies of hoard found in Syria in 1980. This contains coins of Ptolemy VI and V which were struck in a mint moving along the Phonecian Coast with the Ptolemiac army in the 5th Syrian war. From pressed dies copy from coins from the original hoard. The reverse is from the mint of tyre, while the obverse is characteristic of the army mint. Forgery Type: pressed
